These spicy garlic chicken wings inspired by asian flavors are hot, garlicky & crispy! These chicken wings are air fried (not deep fried) and are truly bursting with garlic flavor. If you are a garlic lover like me, you are in for a treat!

I love using bone in party wings for making these, however you can make them with boneless chicken too. We love wings! Might I suggest a few other recipes that I have shared on the blog such as curry chicken wings, sweet tamarind chili wings?

My chicken wing sauce recipe has well balanced flavors - they are not sweet! Every time I make these wings, these disappear in no time!!

While working on my homemade hot garlic sauce recipe, I was thinking of the ways I can use it besides indo chinese dishes like paneer in hot garlic sauce. That is when I decided to try out the sauce with chicken wings and this recipe was born.

We love chicken wings, who doesnt? My 9 year old has recently taken to hot and spicy food with a storm and she's has been loving these for after school snack. I have been making these on the weekend too.

Air frying at the right temperature brings out that crispy texture of the skin and keeps the juicy inside. These will remind you of asian style wings but they are not at all sweet!

The spicy garlic sauce has garlicky salty flavors that will leave your mouth on fire- in a good way though! This is an easy recipe, you can work on the sauce while the wings are in the air fryer. Once done, toss together and serve!

    Ingredients for Spicy Garlic Wings

    • Chicken Wings- Party chicken Wings aka flats and drumettes.
    • For Air Frying the Wings - Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder, Cornstarch
    • For The Spicy Garlic Sauce - chopped garlic, hot garlic sauce, chopped shallots, soy sauce, honey, vinegar

Pro Tip : I used my homemade hot garlic sauce. You can add Huy Fong Chili Garlic Sauce to this recipe.

    Air Frying Chicken Wings

One simple way to ensure that you get ultra crispy air fried chicken wings is to make sure that when they go inside the air fryer- they are dry! Thats it.

Place the raw wings in a single layer on a baking sheet (or any plate you wish) lined with paper towel. Take a second piece of paper towel and crush it between your palms and dab the chicken wings dry on both sides. Leave them to air dry for 10-15 minutes.

Preheat the air fryer to 425F. Discard the paper towel at the bottom and line with a parchment sheet. Then sprinkle garlic powder, baking powder (yes!) fresh ground pepper and cornstarch over the wings. No salt (will make them soggy) No oil. The skins have enough oil to make them crisp.

Very gently move around tp coat the wings in seasonings and cornstarch. No squeezing or too much tossing else the skin starts releasing moisture and get sticky.

Pro Tip:- Make sure that the wings are not too close or touching each other on the tray. I have a large air fryer tray and the entire pound fits in one go, however if you have a small basket, air fry in 2 batches.

Immediately place into the air fryer to crisp up. Let crisp for 15-18 minutes, flip using tongs and let crisp for another 15 minutes on other side.

How To Make Spicy Garlic Wings Sauce

    • While the wings are crisping, make the sauce. In a small pan, heat up the oil on low medium and add the chopped ginger, garlic and shallots. Cook for 2-3 minutes until translucent. Make sure that the garlic dosent burn.
    • Add the hot garlic sauce (or Huy Fong Sauce), soy sauce and honey. Let simmer for 3-4 minutes until a little bit bubbly on sides.
    • Taste and adjust the salt if you wish. Spicy garlic sauce for the wings is ready!
    • Toss the sauce and wings together and serve immediately.

    Some Tips & Notes

    • You can make the sauce ahead and store in the fridge for 2-3 days. Air fry the chicken right when you are ready to serve.
    • Serve immediately as soon as you toss the air fried wings and sauce else wings will get soggy.
    • We prefer a chunky sauce however, you can finely chop or mince the shallots, garlic and ginger if you like a smooth sauce.
    • For a gluten free version, use gluten free soy sauce and chili garlic sauce (if using store bought).
    • I usually don't serve any sauce on the side because these are quite saucy however you can serve with ranch if you wish. My kids like broccoli or cucumbers on the side.
